Attendance Policy

Redondo Union High School recognizes the importance of communication when dealing with attendance policies. Parents, if your student is absent, please contact the Attendance Office at (310) 798-8665 x 4018 or x 4022 on the day of the absence. California Education code states that a student may be excused from school for the following reasons only: illness, religion, or court appearance.  Please note that teachers are not required to give make-up work for unexcused absences.

Average Daily Attendance Goal

It is our GOAL to earn a 96.5% Average Daily Attendance Rate (ADA) for the 2015-16 school year.  Our rate for 2014-15 was 94.86%.  Please help us meet this goal by sending your student to school daily.  Every day a student is absent the school and district loses $31.  RUHS lost $400,000 during the 2014-15 school year due to absences.  Please note that attendance is taken every period.  Therefore, we receive ADA for partial-day attendance. If you have an appointment, please either send your student to school before the appointment OR please drop him or her off after the appointment.  More importantly, partial day attendance allows students to maximize instructional time in their classes.

Students who are late to school should report directly to their first class.  Attendance is taken by our teachers during every period.  Teachers will mark students tardy if they are not in their assigned seat by the bell.  You may view your student’s attendance daily on our Parent Portal, which you may access from our website

Leaving Campus

Students needing to leave campus for a pre-arranged appointment must notify the attendance office for an “off grounds permit”. Leaving school without permission will warrant a TRUANT. Parents must sign-out their student in the attendance office before leaving campus and present ID.  Students must be readmitted through the attendance office upon return.   A valid appointment note is needed to clear the partial day absence.

Truancy or Excessive Absences

Truancy is defined as “students who are found off campus or out of bounds during class or break time without a valid excuse.” Truant students will be cited by the Redondo Beach Police Department. Students with unexcused absences or 4 or more tardies to class will receive a U, and may not be eligible to participate in extracurricular activities. Excessive truancies or absences will be referred to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB).

Re-Admittance Procedures

If an absence is not called in to the office, students must bring a note clearing the absence to the office on the day they return to school. It is important that all absences are cleared within five (5) school days.  Absences that are not cleared will become a CUT (truant). Students are required to email teachers prior to returning to receive missed assignments for excused absences.

Extended Absence

Please contact Becky Cobos at or Reign Endo at  if your student will miss five or more days due to serious illness, hospitalization, injury, or any other personal reason.
