YOUTH WELLNESS RESOURCES FROM SOUTH BAY FAMILIES CONNECTED

  • For social-emotional support during this time when our families are struggling with loss on many different levels, we encourage you to visit our Coping with Grief page for insight and resources.
  • To help bring down the stress level in your home during distance learning, we invite you to check out the resources on our updated Coronavirus Support page and Mindfulness Parenting page.
  • To support your teens with education and inspiration that will help them stave off drug and alcohol use, please visit our newly updated Vaping Facts for Teens Page and Opioid Awareness Page. Here are some recommended activities to empower you and your teens:
    • Watch the full video of our Vaping Prevention Tour with Alex Gray given at schools throughout the South Bay in 2019, including RUHS, with your teen and discuss the facts shared on the page.
    • Watch the Opioid Prevention videos together and alert your teens to the trending issue of fentanyl and overdoses.
    • Visit the SBFC Virtual Teen Center, a resource created by teens for teens, for information and videos to help youth connect and de-stress in healthy ways as we stay safer at home.
  • If you are a parent or guardian looking to connect with support and information, please join us at our free weekly Families Connected Parent Chat provided in partnership with Beach Cities Health District. The group is moderated by Dr. Moe Gelbart of the Thelma McMillen Recovery Center and focuses on various social-emotional wellness topics. Please visit the SBFC Virtual Events page for details.
  • Please visit our own RBUSD Families Connected for additional resources and information.

PARENTS AS TEACHERS CHATS:
RBUSD is excited to bring you "Parents as Teachers" chats to assist families in supporting the social/emotional needs of their children in the home. These chats are being created to address the specific supports requested by families in the recent RBUSD Fall 2020 Family Distance Learning survey. Our goal is to provide families with quick tips that are practical to implement in the household. Our first chat is "Discover what is stressing your child: tips for supporting your child's social/emotional needs at home."

WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER, AND WILL GET THROUGH THIS TOGETHER!

Parent involvement has always been a vital part of any child’s education, but the pandemic and resulting remote instruction require that parents and educators partner at a deeper level.

Following the tremendous success of The Distance Learning Playbook, K-12, education authorities Doug Fisher, Nancy Frey, and John Hattie have teamed up with New York Times bestselling author and parenting expert Rosalind Wiseman to bring you the consummate guide to support your child's academic, social, and emotional development in any learning environment – while not overwhelming you in the process.

This essential guide will arm you with the tools and insight to
  • Create an environment conducive to learning, establish routines, and most importantly, take care of yourself and your child
  • Maximize the time you spend supporting learning by focusing on what is proven to work best in education
  • Help your child develop the cognitive attitudes and habits that foster creativity, critical thinking, and increased responsibility for their learning
  • Support the development of your child’s social and emotional learning skills, including the ability to navigate social interactions, build friendships, and regulate emotions at a time when they have never been more important to have, and more challenging to maintain
The Distance Learning Playbook for Parents outlines supportive strategies for navigating virtual environments to ensure effective and impactful learning that aligns the needs and expectations of teachers, parents, and students alike.
