Sacramento Safari 2019
Sacramento Safari is an educational and advocacy-training trip to Sacrament from April 23-24, 2019.  Through scheduled visits to the Legislature and representatives, participants learn how the legislative system works and about advocacy and pending legislation.  RUHS PTSA will sponsor approximately 4-6 juniors to attend this trip.   Presentations will be made in the 11th grade history classes on December 4-5th and further information, including applications, will be provided to students at that time.  Applications will be due January 8th, 2019.

Dear 9th Grade Parent/Guardian:
A California state law known as the “California Healthy Youth Act” (CHYA) requires comprehensive sexual health education and HIV prevention education be provided to all students, once in middle school and once in high school. The state law mandates CHYA curriculum must be medically accurate, age-appropriate, and inclusive of all students.
RUHS will begin providing this instruction in Biology classes in January, 2019.
A Parent CHYA Information Night will occur on Wednesday, December 12 at 7 pm in the RUHS Library.
Committee participants evaluating CHYA curriculum options included teachers, administrators, parents as well as representatives from the Beach Cities Health District and the Los Angeles County Office of Education. In October 2018, the RBUSD recommended, and Board adopted Positive Prevention Plus as the District’s grades 7-12 comprehensive sexual health education and HIV/AIDS prevention curriculum. Please see the below link to the Positive Prevention Plus curriculum:
The curriculum will include:
• Information about HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including transmission, FDA approved methods to prevent HIV and STIs, and treatment
• Information that abstinence is the only certain way to prevent unintended pregnancy and HIV and other STIs, and information about value of delaying sexual activity
• Discussion about social views of HIV and AIDS
• Information about accessing resources for sexual and reproductive health care
• Information about pregnancy, including FDA approved prevention methods, pregnancy outcomes, prenatal care, and the newborn safe surrender law
• Information about sexual orientation and gender, including the harm of negative gender stereotypes
• Information about healthy relationships and avoiding unhealthy behaviors and situations
You can also examine Positive Prevention Plus written instructional materials by visiting the RUHS campus on Dec 19, 2018 or January 7, 2019 from 8 am to 12:00 noon. After registering in the Admin Building lobby, see Patty Ulrich to obtain the materials for review. If you have questions in the interim regarding the CHYA, please access the following District website link:
All CHYA instruction will be provided by certificated RUHS science and special education teachers.  Each participating teacher received dedicated training on the Positive Prevention Plus curriculum in November 2018.
State law allows you to remove your child from some of this instruction.  An email to 9th grade parents will be sent the week of January 7th detailing daily instruction topics of the Positive Prevention Plus curriculum and if you do not want your child to participate in comprehensive sexual health or HIV prevention education, you will have the opportunity to opt-out your child from the instruction.
