RBEF NEWS

Your RBEF dollars at work for Special Education:
The objective of this project was to use the funding from this grant to purchase materials (i.e. calculators and headphones) that would help teachers support and implement accommodations from students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). "Some students have accommodations on their IEPs that are not always used due to the lack of materials available in classrooms. This then makes it a challenge for students to access the curriculum without any supports." said Lauren Lee, Special Education Teacher. This project has also supported the Testing Center on campus, where students who have access to a separate testing space as an accommodation can go to take their assessments. The Testing Center was in need of supplies (i.e. calculators, headphones and test dividers: see pictures) to support students who take their assessments in a separate setting. "We are grateful to RBEF funding for their support in being able to support a diverse group of learners be successful in their classes." said Cale Espinel, Special Education Teacher.

Your RBEF dollars at work at RUHS Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (MCJROTC):

RBEF dollars funded transportation of the MCJROTC cadets to the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) consortium of San Diego during Spring break, as well as the Air Force Reserve Officers' Training Corps at the University of Southern California (USC) two weeks later. Both trips included tour of the facilities and exchanges with local instructors. Both trips were very informative for cadets of RUHS to experience not only military-oriented life, but also real-time college life. Follow-up surveys were conducted about the visit, and feedback was collected on how they felt about the trip.

"Similar to last school year, RBEF grants provided the opportunity for the cadets to visit these campuses; otherwise, we would not be able to do so due to the limited number of cadets and low budget.  Both trips totaled to about $4,000 that we did not have to fundraise on our own" said Hoang Nguyen, Senior Marine Instructor at Redondo Union MCJROTC. These visits gave students a unique experience not available to prospective students on campus in a typical tour. These visits spark interests and provided a real person or network of contacts for their future planning and questions.
